The year-over-year rate of decline in imports accelerated in May at both ports after improving in April. South Carolina posted its worst month of the year with its fourth consecutive month of 30 percent declines or more. January remains the best performing month this year for both ports.

May’s 3. 2 percent increase from April — when the index plummeted below its 2000 baseline — represented the index’s first uptick since February. Year-over-year comparisons, however, illustrate the weakness in tonnage, with May down 11 percent from a year earlier. The index is 15. 6 percent off its five-year peak of 121.2 reached in January 2005.
